COBRAS members at GI2BX in Belfast Northern Ireland, are running the special event station GB2MGY to commemorate the 95th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, this Saturday and Sunday (14th and 15th).

The COBRAS are affiliated to the ISWL, so this station will count for the Monitor award in the normal way.

The original plan was to operate from Blackhead lighthouse. This has now been shelved. They will instead be operating from the SS Nomadic, which is currently moored beside the Odyssey.

The SS Nomadic was built at the same time as the Titanic and is currently being restored in Belfast.

So if you are QSL'ing direct, please consider adding an extra Dollar for the restoration funds, it will be greatly appreciated.

Worldwide Amateur Ham Radio Broadcast Event April 14-15, 2007

To commemorate the 95th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic, ham radio
operators worldwide will participate in a special-event broadcast
originating from the TITANIC Museum Attraction beginning at 8a.m., Saturday
April 14, and concluding at 7p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2007.

Ham operators will transmit the news of the anniversary using special event
call sign W0S. Operators from Nixa, Missouri have permission from the FCC to
broadcast using this special call sign, which stands for "White Star," the
name of the company that built the Titanic.

The brainchild of museum attraction co-owner, Mary Kellogg Joslyn and Nixa
Amateur Radio Operators Rich Vogt (KB9YZE), Dave Beckler (WA0SAP), Al Gallo
(W0ERE) and Rod Kittleman (K0ADI), the worldwide broadcast will take place
to honor the radio broadcasters working aboard the Titanic on the night she
sank.

On 3 November 1906 the Berlin International Wireless Telegraphy Convention agreement established 500kc/s as the maritime calling and distress frequency and SOS as the distress signal. To mark this centenary the Radio Officers' Association will be on air using the callsign GB500KCS on 3-4 November. QSL via operator's instructions. This special event will form the launch of the Radio Officers' Association campaign for 500 kHz to be recognised internationally as a 'heritage' frequency.
